Paper M2 2026
Paper M2 will be introduced in 2026. It will take place on Tuesday 3 March 2026 and is intended for those candidates who fulfil the requirements to present themselves to this examination (see the new Regulation on the EQE; Supplementary publication 3 – OJ EPO 2024). Candidates must have performed at least two years of professional activity and have passed paper F in order to take the new paper M2.
Paper M2 assesses whether the candidate can apply procedural and substantive patent law of the EPC and the PCT in both day-to-day and exceptional situations arising in the practice of professional representatives in proceedings before the EPO. It further assesses whether the candidate is familiar with all procedures established by the EPC and the PCT and with the procedural law referred to as forming part of the examination syllabus.
At least 50% of the obtainable marks in paper M2 will be for free-text answers and paper M2 is very likely to correspond to paper D1 by its syllabus at least.
Further information on paper M2 will progressively be provided by the EPO, along with a mock examination, if available.
With this in mind, and in order to prepare candidates as effectively as possible for the new paper M2, CEIPI will combine its training preparing for paper M2 with the courses for paper D1.
The preparation for paper M2 consists in:
- a half-day methodology course in September 2025,
- a three-day main seminar in January 2026,
- a mock exam course in February 2026.
Candidates wishing to to prepare themselves for the new paper M2 are strongly advised to enrol for all the above courses.
