Preparation for Paper M2 2026 courses offered as on-site and/or online training

Paper M2 2026

Paper M2 will be introduced in 2026. It will take place on Tuesday 3 March 2026 and is intended for those candidates who fulfil the requirements to present themselves to this examination (see the new Regulation on the EQE; Supplementary publication 3 – OJ EPO 2024). Candidates must have performed at least two years of professional activity and have passed paper F in order to take the new paper M2.

Paper M2 assesses whether the candidate can apply procedural and substantive patent law of the EPC and the PCT in both day-to-day and exceptional situations arising in the practice of professional representatives in proceedings before the EPO. It further assesses whether the candidate is familiar with all procedures established by the EPC and the PCT and with the procedural law referred to as forming part of the examination syllabus.

At least 50% of the obtainable marks in paper M2 will be for free-text answers and paper M2 is very likely to correspond to paper D1 by its syllabus at least.

Further information on paper M2 will progressively be provided by the EPO, along with a mock examination, if available.

With this in mind, and in order to prepare candidates as effectively as possible for the new paper M2, CEIPI will combine its training preparing for paper M2 with the courses for paper D1.

The preparation for paper M2 consists in:

- a half-day methodology course in September 2025,

- a three-day main seminar in January 2026,

- a mock exam course in February 2026.

Candidates wishing to to prepare themselves for the new paper M2 are strongly advised to enrol for all the above courses.

Methodology course preparing for paper M2

The Methodology course preparing for paper M2 will take place on Wednesday 10 September 2025 afternoon. For the English- and German-speaking candidates, this course will be organised online.

During the course, participants will be:

  • get a presentation of paper M2,
  • given advice for its preparation,
  • provided with a methodology and advice to answer the questions,
  • taken through a tutorial on the basis of D1/M2-type questions,
  • given the opportunity to take a mock exam over two questions prepared by CEIPI. The mock paper will be corrected with the tutor, and the participants' questions will be discussed.

Seminar preparing for paper M2 2026

The main seminar preparing for paper M2 will take place from 12 to 14 January 2026.

The seminar will be offered either as a "Strasbourg seminar" on-site or remotely. Experience has shown that the on-site training format prepares candidates most efficiently for the examination, because it facilitates intense communication between tutors and participants and among the course participants. The CEIPI therefore recommends to give priority to the on-site training format. However, in order to also prepare those candidates for the EQE who cannot attend the on-site seminar, this course preparing for Paper M2 of the EQE 2026 will also be offered as online training.

This 3-day seminar aims at enabling candidates to answer  D1/M2-type questions substantively and within the available time. The techniques presented during the introductory course in September will be further developed and put into practice. The working method involves exercise sessions under the supervision of the tutors on the basis of numerous D1/M2 type questions, their correction and the discussion of the answers with the lecturers.

This seminar will be organised in the three official languages of the EPO  (German, English and French).

In addition to the above courses, the CEIPI will organize soon a Wiseflow webinar for registered course participants, which provides practical information on the online examination and its special features on the Wiseflow platform and offers the opportunity to ask questions. The Wiseflow webinar is included in the course fee.

Mock exam course preparing for paper M2 2026

The mock exam course preparing for paper M2 2026 will take place on Wednesday 11 February 2026. It will exlusively be organised online.

Candidates wishing to improve their skills in respect of paper M2 are strongly advised to also enrol for this mock exam course. In this course, candidates put themselves under examination conditions and write a paper M2 within the same time as available in the EQE examination and according to the format of this paper.
This concept has been developed over the recent years for papers F, A, B, C and D and CEIPI considers it valuable to also apply it to the new paper M2.

The aim of the course is to give the candidates the possibility, close to but also sufficiently in advance of the EQE 2026, to exercise their skills in sitting a paper under examination conditions. With the feedback of a tutor following afterwards and the possibility of putting last-minute questions, candidates will have a better idea of whether certain issues need closer study and/or which skills should be further trained.

The course is offered in English, German and French language.

The course is open only for candidates who have enrolled for paper M2 of the EQE 2026.

Module "correction of papers" for candidates for paper M2 2026

As paper M2 is very likely to correspond to paper D1 by its syllabus at least, CEIPI is offering candidates for paper M2 2026 who wish to practice this exam still further, to write paper D1 2021 (adapted) from our “correction of papers” module, and to benefit from the correction of their paper by a CEIPI tutor.  Please contact Ms. Cynthia Jehl to obtain the corresponding registration forms: cynthia.jehl@ceipi.edu
