We are proud to announce that the Preparatory Committee of the UPC has selected the Center for International Intellectual Property Studies (CEIPI) of the University of Strasbourg to organize a training course for the technically qualified judges selected for the new court.

This 2-day training course on “CEIPI Program on Judgecraft and Patent Law for Technically Qualified Judges of the Unified Patent Court” will be held in Paris, on 7 and 8 October 2022, at the Paris Judicial Court.

The Unified Patent Court (UPC) is an international court created by 25 participating member states to settle infringement and validity cases of unitary patents and European patents. Its decisions will be enforceable in all Member States that have ratified the Agreement on a Unified Patent Court.

CEIPI has been selected by the Preparatory Committee thanks to the expertise developed in this field, both for training and research, namely:

  • at the Master’s level, topics related to litigation and judicial issues are included in the programs of the five curricula1
  • at the level of training for professionals, the basics of litigation are addressed in the framework of the University Diploma “Patents, long tuition and accelerated course.
  • CEIPI, in collaboration with the EPI (Institute of Professional Representatives before the European Patent Office), has developed a study program entitled “Patent Litigation in Europe” aimed at patent professionals wishing to deepen and update their knowledge of comparative and regional patent law and patent litigation.

In order to anticipate the creation of the Unified Patent Jurisdiction, the program has been adapted to meet the requirements of the draft curriculum of the European Patent Litigation Certificate2. The curriculum thus includes lectures, exercises, round tables and a mock trial. The Preparatory Committee of the UPC has selected this course as the first among the diplomas offering the status of representative before the UPC.

  • the “Training program for technical judges of the Unified Patent Court”, in partnership with the INPI.
  • 2 editions of this program took place since the opening in 2015
  • 67 participants welcomed during the 2 editions of the program
  •  update modules are held every year (5 editions have already taken place).

With a solid expertise, CEIPI is thus recognized as one of the reference centers for activities related to the Unified Patent Court and the training of its actors.
