Within the Framework of CEIPI Series of Lectures "(RE)thinking Intellectual Property, Fundamental Questions and New Perspectives", CEIPI is organizing a Round Table on May 12, 2014 at 06.00 pm, Amphithéâtre 29, on the topic "(Re)thinking International Intellectual Property: What institutional environment for the development and enforcement of IP law ?".

After a rather straightforward development in the past centuries, the international intellectual property system has become increasingly complex in the last decades. Norm-setting fora have proliferated and plurilateral as well as bilateral initiatives have replaced multilateralism in many areas. While the so-called “Global Era” of the international intellectual property system is characterized by the important role acquired by the World Trade Organization alongside the World Intellectual Property Organisation, the emergence of new actors can also be noticed, re!ecting con!icting expectations and leading to the adoption of instruments that go beyond the international framework.

This roundtable organized by the Centre for International Intellectual Property Studies under the title “(RE)thinking International Intellectual Property Law” will address some of these central issues, namely the role of the WTO in framing the international intellectual property system, the role of WIPO in international intellectual property norm-setting, the design of intellectual property adjudicatory bodies and the challenges arising from plurilateralism and bilateralism.

The participants to this round table will be:

- Christophe Geiger, Associate Professor, Director General and Director of the Research Department, CEIPI,

- Pedro Roffe, Senior Associate, Innovation, Technology and Intellectual Property Programme, International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD), Geneva,

- Daniel Gervais, Professor and Director, Vanderbilt Intellectual Property Program, Faculty Director, LL.M. Program, Vanderbilt Law School, US and Visiting Professor at the CEIPI,

- Carlos Correa, Professor and Director of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies on Industrial Property Law and Economics, University of Buenos Aires (Argentina) and Visiting Professor at the CEIPI,

- Xavier Seuba, Senior Research Associate at the CEIPI, Marie Curie Fellow, Senior Lecturer in Public International Law, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona (Spain) and

- Craig Nard, Tom J.E. and Bette Lou Walker Professor of Law; Director, Center for Law, Technology & the Arts, Case Western Reserve University School of Law, Cleveland (USA) and Visiting Professor at the CEIPI.
