Conference celebrating the 50th anniversary of CEIPI: “Perspectives for the Intellectual Property System in a Globalized World”

To celebrate its 50th anniversary, the Center for International Intellectual Property Studies (CEIPI) at the University of Strasbourg organized a conference titled “Perspectives for the Intellectual Property System in a Globalized World” on 27th and 28th November 2014, under the scientific leadership of Mr. Christophe Geiger, Director General of CEIPI. The celebration symbolically took place at the Council of Europe (COE), the birthplace of the 1963 Strasbourg Convention, the first European convention on substantive patent law.

The conference was held under the high patronage of the European Patent Office (EPO), the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (OHIM) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

The three thematic parts of the conference were opened by keynote speeches of the highest representatives of the major organizations in the area of intellectual property: Mr. António Campinos, President of OHIM and President of the Administrative Board of the CEIPI, Mr. Raimund Lutz, Vice-President Directorate-General Legal/International Affairs of EPO and Mr. Francis Gurry, Director General of WIPO and Former President of the Administrative Board of the CEIPI.

The event was opened by a welcome address of a representative of the hosting institution, Ms. Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni, Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe, followed by introductory remarks of Mr. Yves Lapierre, Director General of INPI, recalling the longstanding partnership between CEIPI and INPI, Mr. Alain Beretz, President of the University of Strasbourg, underlining the fundamental role of CEIPI and more generally of education and research in the field of intellectual property at the University of Strasbourg, and Mr. Christophe Geiger, Director General of CEIPI, evoking the history of CEIPI’s establishment and development, honoring key persons who marked the life of the Centre and introducing the topic of the conference by highlighting the main challenges for the European and international framework for intellectual property protection.
