Description

This unit examines the main intellectual property issues raised by AI and emerging digital technologies. It provides students with a comprehensive overview of the different IP regimes applicable to AI-related innovations, including copyright, trademarks, design rights, plant variety protection and patent. The courses explore how these legal frameworks interact with the development, deployment and commercialisation of AI systems, and analyses the challenges posed by AI-generated content, algorithmic inventions and new forms of digital creation. 

Pedagogical objectives:  

  •     Understand copyright in the AI context, including issues of authorship and generated content. 
  •     Analyse the responsibility of platforms and software copyright protection. 
  •     Examine design law and trademark issues specific to AI. 
  •     Explore automated enforcement, institutional roles. 
  •     Gain an understanding of the impact of AI on plant variety protection. 
  •     Map emerging patent strategies for AI-related inventions. 
  •     Analyse inventorship and patentability issues for AI applications and AI-generated contents. 
  •     Gain an international comparative perspective on patenting AI. 
  •     Practice claims drafting and enforcement challenges.
