CEIPI and the Regional Delegation of INPI Grand Est are pleased to have welcomed to Strasbourg, on 27 February 2025, a delegation from the Office of Intellectual Property from Ivory Coast (OIPI), accompanied by Mr. Sébastien CONNAN, Regional Advisor for Intellectual Property Issues - Africa - INPI Expert.

The delegation was led by Mr. Koffi Paul ASSANDE, Director General of OIPI, Mr. Kouabran Alexis KOUAME, Director of Geographical Indications, Collective Trademarks and Service Development, Mr. Souleymane SORH, Director of Patents, Innovation and Technology Transfer, Ms. Bes Dominique GBALOA, Head of the Department of Communication and Dissemination of Intellectual Property and Ms. Amenan Angèle YAO, Director of Integrated Agro-Industries, Ministry of State, Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Food Production, Ivory Coast.

During the discussions, Mr. Yann BASIRE, the Director General of CEIPI, presented the center’s training courses and activities, as well as avenues for collaboration to strengthen the intellectual property skills of the office’s agents. For his part, Mr. Philippe BORNE, Regional Delegate of INPI Grand Est, presented the activities and mechanisms that INPI is putting in place to support innovative companies and start-ups.

This meeting took place during a study visit that the delegation is making to France, which aims to strengthen the capacities of the agents of the Ivorian Office of Intellectual Property (OIPI) and the Ministry of Agriculture in the management of Geographical Indication (GI), and in the strategy of consolidation, promotion and defense of GIs.

On 19 December 2024, Anna LAWRYNOWICZ-DREWEK will defend her thesis entitled "Le droit processuel appliqué au contentieux des brevets à l'aune de la Juridiction unifiée du brevet: Quel rôle pour la Cour de justice européenne?" under the supervision of Christophe Geiger (Professor, University of Strasbourg/University of Luiss Guido Carli, Italy).

Ms LAWRYNOWICZ-DREWEK's doctoral research was conducted under a doctoral contract co-financed by INPI and the Grand-Est region.

The Center for International Intellectual Property Studies - CEIPI will celebrate its 60^th anniversary on October 15 and 16, 2024, at the European Parliament and the Palais Universitaire in Strasbourg, on the theme “Les Etats Généraux de la Propriété Intellectuelle”.

This event will bring together students, academics, representatives of major national and international intellectual property organizations, such as WIPO, EUIPO, EPO, INPI and CPVO, as well as experts in the fields of industry and law firms.

Intellectual property plays an essential role in our society; yet it is often overlooked or misunderstood. This conference aims to shed light on its importance and to reflect on its role as a lever for issues such as geopolitics, economy, environment, education and culture.

The event will be structured around eight themes, each led by an internationally renowned keynote speaker, followed by a round-table discussion with representatives from industry, politics, law firms, public institutions and universities.

This event benefits from the support of institutional partners, professional associations and socio-economic partners.

Advanced training program: "Regulatory affairs and intellectual property protection in the pharmaceutical industry"

CEIPI has been offering since 2019, in Strasbourg, an advanced training program, a unique educational proposal targeting regulatory and intellectual property professionals in the pharmaceutical sector. The three days of training have revolved around the interface between patent law, supplementary protection certificates and regulatory data protection.

This training program is addressed to regulatory officers, patent attorneys and in-house lawyers, as well as public servants working in public health organizations, who must navigate through the several legal domains of relevance in pharmaceutical research, development and innovation.

Teaching language: English

The next edition will take place on September 19, 20 and 21, 2024.

2024 Results Announcement Ceremony for the “Patents” and the “Trademarks and Industrial Designs” diplomas

The closing ceremony of the academic year for the “Patents” and the “Trademarks and Industrial Designs”diplomas took place on 28 June 2024 with the traditional Results Announcement Ceremony followed by the farewell reception gathering some of the lecturers, students and the CEIPI management and team.

This year, the best students received gifts offered by the CEIPI and the ASPI (Association Française des Spécialistes en Propriété Industrielle de l'Industrie), represented by Géraldine Guery Jacques, President of the Association.

CEIPI would also like to express its deep gratitude to Céline Meyrueis, who has provided excellent supervision of the “Patents” diploma over the last 20 years. Her dedication and expertise have greatly contributed to the success and reputation of this degree. Diogo Costa Cunha will now take over the management of the degree, and we wish him every success in his new role.

CEIPI takes part in the General Assembly of the French National Anti-Counterfeiting Committee (CNAC)

CEIPI took part in the General Assembly of the French National Anti-Counterfeiting Committee (CNAC), held on Friday December 8, 2023 at the French National Assembly, one year after the launch of the "France Anti-Contrefaçon" initiative.

CEIPI was represented by Yann Basire, Director General of CEIPI, and Laury Pereira, Research Assistant.

During the event, Laury Pereira had the opportunity to present the results of her research into counterfeiting via online marketplaces to Christophe Blanchet, MP (President of the CNAC), Pascal Faure, Managing Director of INPI France, and other key players in the fight against counterfeiting.

This work, carried out in collaboration with INPI, puts forward a number of proposals aimed at strengthening the fight against online counterfeiting. They seek to respond to the concerns of rights holders, focusing on the prosecution of cyber counterfeiters, the transparency of online marketplaces and their accountability.

Le cours de droit Allemand des brevets englobe l’ensemble des règles applicables pour protéger, valoriser et défendre les inventions.
Le droit des brevets des Etats-Unis d’ores et déjà connu des participants fera l’objet d’une actualisation tant législative que jurisprudentielle.

Hearing of Franck Macrez and Stéphanie Le Cam before the European Parliament’s JURI Committee in Brussels

CEIPI is pleased to announce that Franck Macrez, Associate Professor at CEIPI and Director of the CEIPI Research Department, and Stéphanie Le Cam, Associate Professor at the University of Rennes 2 and member of the CEIPI Research Department, have been heard by the European Parliament’s JURI Committee, following their study on “Buyout contracts imposed by platforms in the cultural and creative sector”. This study was carried out as part of the framework contract that CEIPI signed with the European Parliament in 2019. As a reminder, in 2019 CEIPI was selected for the third time as an expert to the European Parliament’s JURI Committee, following the call for tenders Framework contract on Expertise on Regulatory and Policy Issues in the Field of Intellectual Property Law.

Retour en images sur le 19 octobre, journée riche en évènements pour le CEIPI !

La journée a débuté par une visite du Parlement Européen en compagnie de Pascal Faure, Directeur général de l'INPI et M. le député Christophe Blanchet, Président du Comité National Anti-Contrefaçon. Ce fût également l’occasion d’échanger avec plusieurs députés européens sur le sujet de la propriété intellectuelle et la contrefaçon.

M. le député Christophe Blanchet et Pascal Faure ont ensuite partagé leur expertise lors d'une courte conférence et un moment d’échanges dédié aux étudiants du CEIPI.

Enfin, l'événement "Faites de la PI" a pris place dans les locaux de la Région Grand Est. Organisé conjointement par le CEIPI, l'INPI France, la CNCPI - Compagnie Nationale des Conseils en Propriété Industrielle et l'IEEPI - Institut Européen Entreprise et Propriété Intellectuelle, cet événement visait à sensibiliser le public à la propriété intellectuelle, en mettant l'accent sur la lutte anti-contrefaçon et la protection de l'innovation.

Une table ronde autour de la contrefaçon s'est tenue à cette occasion, en présence de témoins et d’experts :

This event will take place on 11 and 12 October, in Strasbourg (CEIPI, Bâtiment le CARDO) and online (Zoom).

The European patent system presents a dual asymmetry. Firstly, it functions independently of the European Union, maintaining a distinct legal framework, prompting questions regarding its alignment with Union law. Secondly, the European Patent Office grants patents following stringent examination criteria, but its interpretation of legislative texts may conflict with that of national courts, risking patent annulment during infringement cases.

This duality creates legal ambiguity for companies, impacting both the feasibility of their patent applications and the valuation of awarded patents essential to their innovations. This uncertainty poses challenges to businesses operating within this framework.

The focal point of this conference is to address these pivotal and fundamental inquiries by employing a comparative approach that contrasts the diverse practices of the Office, applicants, and the case law of judicial courts across major European countries in the realm of patents.

CEIPI Conference: "AI, creativity and innovation at the crossroads"

How has AI modified the practice in science, innovation and the arts? How can AI be used for creative endeavours, to generate novel ideas, open research tracks or help bring about original artefacts?

Join us for a roundtable to explore the impact of artificial intelligence, with five distinguished researchers in economics, robotics, arts, and innovation.
