Description
This unit introduces students first to the fundamental concepts and techniques of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). It provides an overview of key AI/ML algorithms and their practical applications, while developing basic programming skills in Python. Through practical exercises and a collaborative AI hackathon, students will gain hands-on experience in implementing and experimenting with machine learning methods.
The unit then provides students with an interdisciplinary understanding of artificial intelligence and emerging digital technologies. It examines the broader societal context of AI by exploring its philosophical, sociological, economic and environmental implications.
Pedagogical objectives:
- Understand the fundamentals of AI and Machine learning,
- Develop fundamental coding skills in Python for AI/ML.
- Gain hands-on problem-solving experience through practical coding examples and an AI Hackathon.
- Understand philosophical, sociological, and economic frameworks for analysing AI.
- Critically assess the social and environmental impact of digital technologies.
