Preparation for Paper M2 2027 courses offered as on-site and/or online training

Introduced in 2026, Paper M2 will take place on 4 March 2027 and is intended for those candidates who fulfil the requirements to present themselves to this examination (see the new Regulation on the EQE; Supplementary publication 3 – OJ EPO 2024). Candidates must have performed at least two years of professional activity and usually must have passed paper F in order to take the new paper M2 (unless they benefit from the various specified exceptions).

Paper M2 assesses whether the candidate can apply procedural and substantive patent law of the EPC and the PCT in both day-to-day and exceptional situations arising in the practice of professional representatives in proceedings before the EPO. It further assesses whether the candidate is familiar with all procedures established by the EPC and the PCT and with the procedural law referred to as forming part of the examination syllabus.

In 2026, Paper M2 is exactly the same as the Paper D1 (minus 1 question for session 2). For 2027, and the upcoming years, at least 50% of the obtainable marks in paper M2 will be for free-text answers just like previous D1 questions and paper M2 will be very likely to correspond to paper D1 by its syllabus at least.

The preparation for paper M2 consists in:

- a two-day methodology course in September and November 2026,

- a three-day main seminar in January 2027,

- a mock exam course in February 2027.

Candidates wishing to prepare themselves for the new paper M2 are strongly advised to enrol for all the above courses.

The Methodology course preparing for paper M2 will last two days and take place on 28 September  and 30 November 2026. This course will be organised online. 

This course is essential for any candidates taking Paper M2 for the first time in order to prepare thoroughly for the Seminar in January which will be testing their preparation.

In particular, it is essential to understand how the Paper is structured and how the questions should be dealt with to get a maximum of points out of them, but also to determine how to organise the following months as regards their preparation.

During the course, participants will be:

• get a presentation of paper M2,
• given advice for its preparation,
• provided with a methodology and advice to answer the questions,
• taken through a tutorial on several questions,
• given the opportunity to take a mock exam over two questions prepared by CEIPI. The mock paper will be corrected with the tutor, and the participants' questions will be discussed.

Finally, between the methodology course and the seminar, candidates will be handed regularly with some questions M2-like to help them test their knowledge as well as their ability to write thoroughly an answer.

The course is offered in English, German and French language.

The main seminar preparing for paper M2 will take place from 11 to 13 January 2027.

The seminar will be offered either as a "Strasbourg seminar" on-site or remotely. Experience has shown that the on-site training format prepares candidates most efficiently for the examination, because it facilitates intense communication between tutors and participants and among the course participants. The CEIPI therefore recommends to give priority to the on-site training format. However, in order to also prepare those candidates for the EQE who cannot attend the on-site seminar, this course preparing for Paper M2 of the EQE 2027 will also be offered as online training.

This 3-day seminar aims at enabling candidates to answer M2 questions substantively and within the available time. The techniques presented during the introductory course in September will be further developed and put into practice. The working method involves exercise sessions under the supervision of the tutors on the basis of numerous M2 questions, their correction and the discussion of the answers with the lecturers.

This seminar will be organised in the three official languages of the EPO  (German, English and French).

The mock exam course preparing for paper M2 2026 will take place on Wednesday 10 February 2027. It will exlusively be organised online.

Candidates wishing to test and improve their skills in respect of paper M2 are strongly advised to also enrol for this mock exam course. In this final course before the exam, candidates put themselves under examination conditions and write a paper M2 within the same time as available in the EQE examination and according to the format of this paper. With the feedback of a tutor following afterwards and the possibility of putting last-minute questions, candidates will have a better idea of whether certain issues need closer study and/or which skills should be further trained. 
This concept has been developed over the recent years for papers F, M1 and M2, and previous papers A, B, C and D.

As paper M2 corresponds to paper D1 by its syllabus at least, CEIPI is offering candidates for paper M2 2027 who wish to practice this exam still further, to write an adapted version of paper D1 2021 from our “correction of papers” module, and to benefit from the correction of their paper by a CEIPI tutor.  Candidates can choose among four possible dates before the EQE to submit their paper for correction.
