Preparatory Seminars EQE

Presentation

In cooperation with the European Patent Office (EPO) and with European Patent practitioners, the Centre for International Intellectual Property Studies (CEIPI) is organizing seminars preparing for the European Qualifying Examination 2017. These seminars take place in Strasbourg.

Participants are expected to have reached an advanced stage in their own preparations for the examination. To this end, introductory ("Pre-prep") courses for Papers A + B, C and D will be held in Strasbourg and Paris in Autumn 2016.

To take full benefit of the preparatory seminars in November 2016 and January 2017, candidates are advised to enrol for the Introductory ("Pre-prep") Courses as well; it helps them to acquaint themselves with the methodologies taught at an earlier stage.

The seminar's European character is reflected in the international mix of tutors (qualified European Patent attorneys as well as agents of the EPO) and participants. Group-based work ensures discussion between the two. Participants are required to know one of the EPO's official languages (English, French or German).

The working texts for the seminars are largely based on past EQE papers, updated if necessary. Both seminars will incorporate mock exams in the form of papers from former EQEs.

Papers A + B and C

The seminar on Papers A (drafting of claims and an introduction), B (preparing a reply to an official letter) and C (drafting an opposition) will be held from 14 to 18 November 2016.

The seminar will cover the following topics: drafting claims and drafting an introduction to the description in Paper A; replying to a communication and preparing an amended set of claims in Paper B; and drafting both a notice of opposition and a response to client questions in Paper C.

The part AB or C may be booked separately. The seminar AB deals with the new format of these papers as from 2017.

The seminar will be held in each official language of the EPO (German, English and French).

The methodologies discussed in the introductory courses ("Preprep"-courses) will be reviewed and deepened, using a past paper, under the guidance of a tutor. The important topics like problem/solution approach, priority, inadmissible amendments and prior use will also be discussed further.

Participants will have the opportunity to apply the strategies and methodologies discussed by doing the 2016 A and B papers under mock examination conditions. For paper C, exercises are mixed with the examination C 2015, the latter under mock exam conditions. Various approaches and suggested solutions will then be presented and discussed in the light of the Examiners' Reports and the "CEIPI-solution".

The AB and C seminars are for those intending to sit the examination in 2017 (main examination).

Paper D

The seminar on legal questions (D-paper) will be held from 09 to 13 January 2017 (fully booked) or from 23 to 27 January 2017 (only in English)

The seminar aims to enable candidates to answer the legal questions substantively and within the time allowed. It serves as a final test for the EQE. The method involves independent work under the tutors' supervision, plus discussion of the answers. Candidates learn and practice the different approaches needed to tackle the questions of Part D1 as well as the more extensive question of part D2, and practise these techniques.

The Paper D seminars are for those intending to sit the examination in 2017 (main examination).

You can download below the program of the 2017 D seminar.
